Someone you love was just arrested in Florida. Here’s how bail works, step by step.
First, they’re booked into the county jail. You can find them with the county’s online inmate search, or a bail agent can look them up for you.
Next, bail gets set. Many charges have a set amount on a bond schedule. Others wait for a judge at first appearance, usually within 24 hours of the arrest.
You can pay the full bail to the jail yourself, or use a licensed bail bond agent. With an agent, you pay a premium Florida sets: 10% of the bond, with a $100 minimum, and it isn’t refunded. A $5,000 bond costs $500.
A cosigner signs the bond and promises the defendant will go to court. Larger bonds may need collateral.
The agent posts the full bond at the jail. Release usually takes a few hours, depending on the jail.
Then the most important part: go to every court date. Missing one can forfeit the bond and lead to a new warrant.
